What is antipyrine; benzocaine ear solution?

ANTIPYRINE; BENZOCAINE (Allergen®, Auralgan®, Auroto Otic®, Otocalm®) relieves minor ear pain and itching. The solution may also be used to get rid of excessive ear wax. Generic antipyrine; benzocaine ear solution is not yet available.

What should my health care professional need to know before I use antipyrine; benzocaine ear solution?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

• ear discharge

• infection

• perforated eardrum

• an unusual or allergic reaction to antipyrine, benzocaine, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

• pregnant or trying to get pregnant

• breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine?

Antipyrine; benzocaine is only for use in the outer ear canal. Follow the directions carefully. Wash hands before and after use. The solution may be warmed by holding the bottle in the hand for 1—2 minutes. Lie with the affected ear facing upward. Fill ear canal with the solution. After the drops are instilled, remain lying with the affected ear upward for 5 minutes to help the drops stay in the ear canal. A cotton pledget moistened with medication may be gently inserted at the ear opening for no longer than 5—10 minutes to ensure retention. Repeat, if necessary, for the opposite ear. Do not touch the tip of the dropper to the ear, fingertips, or other surface. Do not rinse the dropper after use; keep container tightly closed.

If using for ear wax removal, your healthcare provider will tell you how to use this medication.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose.

What drug(s) may interact with antipyrine; benzocaine ear solution?

Antipyrine; benzocaine ear solution does not interact with other medicines.

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines that you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What should I watch for while taking antipyrine; benzocaine?

Antipyrine; benzocaine ear solution is not for long-term use. Do not use for more than a few days without checking with your prescriber or health care professional. Do not use if there is any discharge from the ear. Contact your prescriber or health care professional if your condition does not improve within a few days or if you notice burning, redness, itching or swelling.

What side effects may I notice from using antipyrine; benzocaine ear solution?

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:

• burning, itching, redness, swelling, or pain in the ear (very rare)

Where can I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F) in a tight, light-resistant container; do not freeze. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
